چکیده

After a soil fertility baseline had been'determined for the Georgia Forestry Commission's (GFC) Morgan Nursery, a single nursery protocol consistently produced high quality oak seedlings. The fertility baseline developed at the Institute of Tree Root Biology (ITRB) Whitehall Experimental Nursery and adjusted for three GFC nurseries has a background target level at CA, K, P, Mg, Cu. Zn, and B of 500, 80, 80, 50, 0.3-3, 3-8 and 0.4-1.2 ppm, respectively, ‘at time of sowfng. Up to 1345 kg/ha of RH4N03 are applied throughout the growing season in small increments at regularly scheduled intervals. When most seedlings are entering their second growth flush regular irrigation fs stopped, and water is provided only when tensionmeters register 30 to 50 centibars. The desired seedbed density is between 54 and 57/m . This protocol permits ready fdentific$tion of competitive seedlings. Individuals with the potential to develop hfgh numbers of first-order lateral roots (FGLR) are wall established in the dominant canopy in nursery beds. Based'on stem and root characteristics, approximately half of the seedlings of most species can be classified as desirable. For most species of oak, competitive ability of these seedlings after outplanting has not been determined. Specific species attributes based on their site required are obvious when seedlings are lifted and are discussed. Funding for this study was partially supplied by the Department of Defense Agreement #DE-AfOg-86SRlS122 and Georgia Forestry Commission Agreement #29-404.

The effect of simulated dust storm on wood development and leaf stomata in Quercus brantii L

Dust storms are increasingly threatening the forest ecosystem in Western Iran. Due to its coverage of vast area of Zagros forest, the Quercus brantii is at the front line of the attack. Most tree deaths in this forest are from this species. This study aims to investigate the effect of simulated dust on wood development and leaf stomata from seedlings of Persian oak. The oak seedlings were...

Influence of overstory density on ecophysiology of red oak (Quercus rubra) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum) seedlings in central Ontario shelterwoods.

A field experiment was established in a second-growth hardwood forest dominated by red oak (Quercus rubra L.) to examine the effects of shelterwood overstory density on leaf gas exchange and seedling water status of planted red oak, naturally regenerated red oak and sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) seedlings during the first growing season following harvest. Canopy cover of uncut control sta...

Regeneration of Oaks and Tanoak in Phytophthora ramorum-Affected Forests

Recent mortality in coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), California black oak (Q. kelloggii), and tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus) exceeds historical levels in forests affected by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. We assessed the balance between recent mortality and seedling populations in these species to examine the status of regeneration in stands with varying levels of mortality caused by P...

Observations of Mycorrhizal Inoculation of Pin and Scarlet Oak Production In Containers

Proper protocol for mycorrhizal inoculation of container grown landscape trees is uncertain. Therefore, vegetative and commercial spore inoculum of Pisolithus tinctorius were applied to Quercus palustris (pin oak) and Q. coccinea (scarlet oak) seedlings. All plants were grown in containers filled with 0.9 liters of milled pine bark, sterilized milled pine bark, sterilized mineral soil, or steri...

Wildfire alters oak growth, foliar chemistry, and herbivory

Fire is a major disturbance factor influencing the formation and maintenance of oak (Quercus)-dominated forests of eastern North America. Fire suppression practices have resulted in declining oak dominance, and caused the loss of oak seedlings due to poor light regimes and vegetative competition. Both wildfires and prescribed fires can alter forest stand composition and influence succession. Fi...
